Calculated with Astronomy Engine, an open-source library verified against the US Naval Observatory and NASA JPL. How we calculate
Northern Hemisphere
first day of astronomical spring
Southern Hemisphere
first day of astronomical autumn
At the March equinox the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. Day and night are close to equal everywhere, the Sun rises almost exactly in the east and sets almost exactly in the west, and from now on the Northern Hemisphere gets more daylight than the Southern.
Why "equal night" is not exact: sunrise and sunset are measured at the upper edge of the Sun and the atmosphere bends its light, so on the equinox most places get a few minutes more day than night.
The exact moment
Solstices and equinoxes are instants, not whole days: the moment is the same everywhere, only the clock time differs by time zone.
