About Heliotempo
Heliotempo answers practical questions about the sun: when it rises and sets, when the light is golden, where it is in the sky, how much of it reaches your home, balcony, garden or solar panels, and how all of that changes through the year. Every tool works for any place on Earth and any date, in six languages.
The name
Heliotempo joins two old words: the Greek hḗlios, the sun, and the Italian tempo, which means both time and weather. Sun and time is exactly what the site is about: where the sun is at any moment, and when it rises, sets and turns golden wherever you are.
Who is behind it
I’m Maja Dobnik Kočevar, a software developer from Maribor, Slovenia. I build web and mobile apps, and I care most about the details people notice without thinking about them: pages that load instantly, tools that make sense on a small screen, and numbers you can trust.
In my own projects I like small, well-made things that solve one problem properly, such as an interactive 3D family-tree archive, a historical voyage atlas on a WebGL globe, and a cooking converter in 24 European languages. I design, build and run each of them myself.
Heliotempo started with a simple frustration: the best sun calculators are powerful but hard to use, especially on a phone. So I built the tools I wanted: accurate sun times, sun paths and shadows for any place on Earth, explained in plain language in six languages. Every calculation is based on published astronomical algorithms, and the methods and sources are on the methodology page.
You can find more of my work on my portfolio.
How the site works
- Accuracy first. Sun positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source library verified against the US Naval Observatory’s NOVAS and NASA JPL Horizons. Results are tested against independent calculations and published almanac times.
- Plain answers. Each tool starts with the answer to its question, then shows charts, tables and explanations for those who want more.
- Privacy by design. Your location stays in your browser. Place search runs on data served with the site, not on an external service. Analytics and advertising cookies are only used with your permission where the law requires it.
- Fast and light. Pages are static and the heavy parts, such as maps and 3D views, load only when you need them.
How it is funded
Heliotempo is free to use. It is funded by advertising from Google AdSense. Ads never influence the calculations or the content, and there are no affiliate links or paid placements.
